Matchy Military Green Boys

This morning on the monitor we heard Koen planning his outfit, "now, I need a military outfit. Ok, here's my military pants and now I need a matchy, matchy military green shirt. There it is. Perfect." When I went to get him he was in head to foot military green for sure (including some socks he found at the bottom of his sock drawer that are intended for 6-12 months!). Then when we went to Tavin he asked if I could put Tavin in a military outfit too. It just so happens that Tavin does indeed have a few things that are military green approximately. Koen was pretty excited. After breakfast, Doug got them to take some pictures together. Tavin's face is contorted to say, "Cheese!" After lunch you get another glimpse of the matchy boys. They are singing and dancing to some Kidz Gig songs. Koen is so into it. He isn't watching TV, he's watching his reflection in the TV. Priceless. Check out Tavin's moves...he gets a little dizzy!

Let's Stick To The Good Stuff

So, the last 24 hours have been intense. That's why I haven't blogged despite the fact we've had some fun surrounding quite a troubling moment last night. I might as well just put it out there...we had someone break into our home when I was home with the boys. Thankfully by God's grace and protection we were not harmed, but it the emotional strain has been more difficult than I anticipated. Thankfully we have been overwhelmed by the kindness of our neighbors and church community. We are overwhelmed with God's provision of wonderful friends to support us through such an alarming situation.

So, now, on to the good stuff. Yesterday morning, before the craziness, we went to Koen's friend's house. They have a fantastic back yard with a tree house, sand box and lots of trucks. The boys were so excited! Oh yeah, the best part was that they had this mini go-cart roller coaster. In itself the toy isn't super exciting, but they have it on a hill and the go-cart just rolls down the slide and then all the way down the slope. Koen and Tavin loved it! At first it was kind of a thing to fight over, but eventually the big boys got into some other projects and Tavin got it all to himself. Check out the video footage!

Later on, Tavin got into some other projects too. Both my sweet boys loved playing with little guys their age and enjoyed some new toys. Thanks so much, Allison. You are a lovely hostess and your boys are fabulous at sharing all their fun toys!

Now, today, with a shaken up mommy who really didn't want to spend much time at the house, I picked Koen up from nursery school with a picnic lunch packed and we headed to a park to get some energy out and take in some fresh air until naptime. Koen and Tavin really played well together today. It was really sweet and fun to see them enjoying one another so much. A glimpse of the best friends they are becoming and the playmates they will be.Naptime was safe and sound and our dear friends Sean and Jen brought us dinner which was a wonderful show of support and greatly appreciated that I didn't have to plan a meal in my off-kilter state. I feel a lot better tonight and I'm looking forward to another new day tomorrow. Thanks to all our friends and family near and far who have sent emails, texts, left voicemails and said prayers for our family. It is so comforting.

We're All Back Together

Well, truly we were back yesterday afternoon, but as you can imagine we had our hands full unpacking, cleaning, getting the boys through the rest of their days, etc. I cannot go on without a quick ode to my travel buddy, Tavin. He is just amazing on the plane. He again slept after take-off and then he and I had a little picnic for lunch and after we finished that there was time for about 20 minutes of playing with his little cars I brought and we were landing in Pittsburgh.Koen was pretty high-strung yesterday and was super excited about us coming home, so he never settled down to nap. Thankfully he was quiet much of the afternoon and then played happily not knowing we were actually home busily getting unpacked, etc. Tavin, on the other hand, fell asleep hard and took a long nap despite his cat nap on the plane. I'm so happy he is naturally catching up (little does he know that he and I are off to Florida again next weekend to see my brother Phil, his wife Leah and their new daughter, Eleanor!). After naptime Doug took Koen on a bike ride and they ended up finding Delia on her bike. Doug offered to take her around with Koen and so the two little friends had a blast riding their bikes and playing at the playground. Here's the hilarious show they came up with for Doug...

They were having so much fun together that Doug invited Delia for dinner (he and Koen were making omelettes for Koen and Tavin). She was able to come. She did some crafts while Koen cooked her omelette. Pretty cute! The friends had a nice dinner (not to mention the brothers were pretty happy to be together again. We took the kids out to the backyard to spin off the last of the energy they had before bedtime. It was cute to see them all together. They got along great (and of course got a little silly which was entertaining).

Dapper Tavin

Tavin and I made it to the wedding (we were unsure if we would if he napped long and Doug couldn't get us, but it worked out that Tavin woke up right when Doug could pick us up, so we threw our dress clothes on and headed out the door.

When we arrived at the wedding spot, we had some time to kill so we walked around in the gardens and fountain area. It was a really interesting venue, so I'm glad we got to enjoy it.Tavin let me push him around for awhile, but as you can see he soon wanted to get down and check it out for himself. Here's a picture of my handsome little man.And here's the best picture I got of the two of us trying to take it myself while also trying to keep him sitting there. He did pretty well at the wedding although we spent most of it listening from an adjoining room. I didn't mind though. He's had to deal with so much out of the ordinary, I was just thankful he wasn't losing it and we could still hear most of it (not to mention he got hilariously slap happy and I think my kid is so cute I just enjoy watching him!).

We didn't make it to the reception. The event looks to be a long one and Doug was able to take us back to the hotel while the bride and groom had their pictures taken. He's doing the prayer at the dinner, so he's back at the reception taking it all in and reporting back via text. I'm looking forward to my to-go box whenever he gets home. =)

Hopefully Tavin takes full advantage of the fact he got to bed almost on time tonight and is well-rested for our travels home tomorrow. I am quite confident he'll be fine either way though with how the rest of the trip has gone. Thanks for all of you praying for us on this quick getaway and another thank you to Kassi and Kylie caring for Koen back home!

Special K Weekend Continues

To get Koen all psyched up for his weekend at home, I named it "Special K Weekend" because he was spending one day with Kassi and two days with Kylie. He loved the sound of this! This morning I talked to him on the phone and he said, "Mommy, are you having fun? I'm having a great time. I don't miss you at all." Perfect!

Kylie is a sweet friend we met through church (she actually interned there last year), she's now a teacher and is just amazing with kids. We are so thankful she is giving up her weekend to hang out with Koen. This morning she took Koen to Voluto as she needed to fuel up on caffeine for sure as hanging out with a bright, talkative kid like Koen can require a recharge!Kylie's boyfriend Daniel joined them for the bike ride excursion to the coffee shop, apparently Koen and Daniel get along well too.Koen found a fun little friend there to peek in on...And oops! is that a kiss Koen Douglas! Gotta say it's pretty cute!I'm not sure what else they've done today, but I'm sure it's been fun for Koen he loves the special attention and one-on-one time with these special people who care for him. Thanks so much, Kylie!

Another Beach Morning With The Bug

We are having fun just hanging out with Tavin. Koen would have been way overtired with the odd hours and we have been spending quite a bit of time in the hotel room and he would've just been bouncing off the walls! We miss him for sure, but we are so thankful he's been having his own fun time at home with friends (by the way, I will post momentarily about what he and Kylie have been up to...stay tuned).

We decided to bail on the lame continental breakfast today. We headed to this great nouveau diner, Diner 60 West, just a mile up the road from our hotel. Tavin was at first super excited about his eggs, but he quickly hit a momentary rock bottom. It was the tiredness finally showing itself. He pulled it together by the end of the meal though and we took him back to the hotel for some down time and so that we could pack up for the beach. Here's what I found my boys up to after I got done packing up and changing into my suit. Adorable!Tavin loved, loved, loved the beach again. He was more at ease there today and we managed him better between keeping him busy with little sand projects and taking him for dips in the ocean to cool off. He was actually willing to stay longer and play when we decided to pack it up and leave. We didn't want to push it though knowing that we still had to grab some lunch and get back to the hotel before naptime. Eating out gets old to me when you have to rely on it for practically every meal on trips like this, and I'm sure Tavin feels that way as well. He did awesome at lunch though. It was another outdoor patio with fans and shade, so we took in some more sea air and lovely beach views during our light lunch. Here's Tavin organizing the sugar packets and playing with the rental car keys. You know, keeping busy!
Here's a glimpse of the view. I love being at the ocean. Even just the few hours we've spent on the beach and in view of it have made all the craziness of quick trip with a baby totally worth it!
Well, it's naptime now and I'm praying Tavin sleeps all afternoon. We will probably have another somewhat late night for him in order to be at the beginning of the reception to meet and greet the family of the newlyweds, etc. I'm sure he'll manage fine, but plenty of rest would definitely work in our favor!

Trooper the Pooper

I couldn't resist naming this post so literally. The best description of Tavin for this trip is Trooper certainly (I'll explain the second half later). Last night was the rehearsal dinner and it was supposed to start at 7pm, Tavin's bedtime. We took him along with realistic expectations and good attitudes that we would all just make it work. Tavin was on the same page for sure. We were one of the first cars that arrived and we knew that was a bad sign that the meal would not be served in a timely fashion. Before I get to the rest of the story, here's Tavin and Daddy upon arrival...cheerful, cute and clean. After keeping Tavin in the banquet hall for about 20 minutes (and he was getting pretty loud and slap happy) and no food was served and not even all the guests had arrived, I decided to take Tavin on a walk. Turns out we took a walk for over an hour. He was very chill on the walk and looked like he would just fall asleep at any minute. Doug texted us around 8:20pm that the food was ready and we ate at 8:30pm. Tavin was the talk of the table making friends with the pretty girls and making the guys laugh. He didn't eat a bite, poor guy. So tired and turns out the poor kid was sitting in a very large mess that I had no idea he had worked on during our long walk. He sat there in it all through dinner and then through Doug's little schpeel that he and the couple getting married did for about 15 minutes. What a good boy! I picked him up as we were packing up to go and I thought I smelled something. When I readjusted him to get him in his car seat I not only smelled something, but felt something all over my hand. It was a complete mess up his back. We stripped him in the parking lot (yeah, real classy, I know, but I wasn't about to take him back into the hall dripping with that stuff!), cleaned him up, diapered him and he rode home in his skivvies. Super cute actually. He didn't get to bed until about 9:30pm and fell asleep right away. Thankfully he again slept all night until normal wake up time. What a good boy!

My Little Trooper

Tavin impressed us again. He slept all night (which at home is no big deal, but on the road and sick? that's impressive!). He did make some really weird noises and coughed some that woke me up a bunch, but we were all so tired, we slept on. Here's the bright and cheery pajama'd boy before breakfast. And here he is after breakfast. Even happier!Hanging out with Pastor Daddy (preparing for the wedding) , on the couch. It looks like Tavin is deep in thought or even kneeling and folding his hands to pray, but really what happened is that he dropped his truck between the couch and the desk. After our slow wake up and lame continental breakfast, our dear friend Alyssa came over to come to the beach with us. Alyssa is a Pittsburgh friend who's been living in Florida for 3 years. It was so wonderful to introduce her to Tavin, catch up on life for all of us and be at the beautiful beach together. I love those friendships where you can just pick up where you left off. Ours with Alyssa is definitely one of those!

Here's our little beach bum, loving being back in the sand and the waves.
Then we had a totally beach bum lunch where Tavin made it through despite now being very tired, quite warm and the drippy nose had returned. Doug and I definitely enjoyed sitting outside, chatting with Lys and devouring some super fresh and tasty mahi mahi fish tacos with mango salsa and guacamole. Yum!Thanks for driving up to visit us, Lys. We had a great morning with you. Gotta run now, Tavin is up from his nap. Thankfully he slept for almost 3 hours. He really, really needed it!

Off To Tampa (With A Few Unplanned Stops)

Doug is doing a wedding for a sweet couple from church. Lucky for us the wedding is in Clearwater, FL! Doug is the envy of his pastoral peers. Tavin and I got to tag along and Koen is home with friends. It's a quick trip, but it has all the makings of a potentially fun adventure.

Unfortunately, Tavin got a cold a few day goes and this morning was pulling on his ear. So amidst my crazy last minute packing, I also had to squeeze in a doctor's appointment (unplanned stop #1). Thankfully it was a quick one and the outcome was that Tavin's right ear was indeed red and could certainly turn into an infection (especially with the aggravation of pressure changes on the airplane rides). We got a prescription just to be safe (well, I'm just holding onto it as it unnerves me to give the meds to Tavin if it isn't yet an infection). Hopefully his health will clear up and he won't need them, but better safe than sorry when traveling for sure!

After getting home I scrambled to do the last few items on my things-to-do list before Doug came to pick up Tavin and I and Kassi came to hang out with Koen. Amazingly enough we got out the door a little before noon, right on time.

On our way to the airport I got a text from one of my bridesmaids, Corrie. She was actually coming into Pittsburgh for a wedding this weekend with her husband, Matt. Amazingly enough their arriving flight and our departure time worked out perfectly so that we were pulling into the airport just as they landed. We got to chat for a few minutes at ticketing while I fed sick Tavin some "Little Fevers" and waited for Doug to park the cars. It was awesome to see such a wonderful friend whom I hadn't seen in over a year. Although, it did leave me wishing we could stay and hang out with them in the Burgh!

Well, despite the temptation to stay, Tavin, Doug and I took off on our "direct" flight to Tampa on time. Why is "direct" in quotes? Well, unplanned stop #2 of the day was that when we were about 30 mins. outside of Tampa the pilots had to start flying around aimlessly waiting for some severe storms to pass. After doing that for what seemed like forever, they decided to go back up to Panama City Beach to refuel. We sat on the ground there for about a half hour and then took off again for Tampa (about a 50 minute flight). We finally landed in Tampa at 7:35pm (3 hours after our scheduled arrival). Unfortunately due to all the weather delays, there were no gates left, so we sat on the tarmac for another 30 minutes. I have to report though that Tavin was amazing this entire flight despite an irritated eardrum, a cough and the world's drippiest nose (not to mention his tummy is a little off if you know what I mean).People sitting near us on the plane couldn't say enough about how wonderful of a traveler Tavin is. I could only agree.

During our tarmac wait I did get a quick report from Kassi that everything at home is going well, here's a picture of Koen and "Mr. Joe" in a fort they must have built watching a Thomas DVD. Looks like fun!Well, we are here at the hotel now. Our room has quite an odd setup, so we made it even weirder with encapsulating Tavin's pack and play with some sheets to make it a little more private for him (i.e. so he doesn't wake up in the morning if I have to get up to go to the bathroom). Hopefully we all sleep long and hard. Tavin definitely deserves it!

Way Too Many Pictures For Just A Night In The Park

Just a normal day here. Morning walking trip to the library with some neighborhood friends that turned into a random major screaming tantrum for Koen. That was embarassing. We booked it home as he lost the privilege of being with other human beings. He spent some time cooling off in his room with no Teddy privilege either (Teddy doesn't like unpleasant 4 year olds either). After lunch he was much more himself and after nap even more so, so we headed to the playground. It was a little playing on the playground equipment, but mostly bike-riding and wagon-pulling...These pictures of Koen below are hilarious. I said, "Say Cheese" and this is what he does! What on earth? And back to Tavin hard at work (so hard at work that construction workers even stopped to comment on how impressive it was that he could pull the wagon up a hill!).Koen and Tavin found a ramp that was quite fun. Yep, that's right, just up and down and up and down and up and down. As you can see, Koen took a little spill, but no big deal...He was back up and going in seconds...We had a surprise drive by from Daddy. He was in the neighborhood between meetings and literally was driving by and spotted us (or perhaps heard me screaming Koen's name when he biked out of eyesight?). The boys were thrilled!Well, that is "all" the pictures from the playground. I like that simple life is that much fun that I can snap a bunch of pics of my cute boys, hopefully you do too.

Backyard Zoo

Koen has been working on a new construction project this weekend. Doug helped him get it started yesterday and he took off with the idea. He built a zoo. Well, tonight we completed it with animals (thanks, Nana!). Koen was so proud of himself. He was quite busy putting on the finishing touches. There was even a special, secret arrival of a new animal to the zoo (he just pretended that animal up...it was a zebra (and another elephant he said)). Here's the hard working zookeeper...And here he is proud of his project and Tavin, his sidekick. The best is that after I took the pictures he said, "Hey Mommy, can you put those pictures on your blog so Daddy and Gramma and Grampa can see it?" Since when did he figure out I have a blog?

Trip to the Farm

Yesterday afternoon we woke the boys up from their naps an hour earlier than usual, jumped in the car and headed out to the deep South Hills. Our friends from church have a lovely home and property that they enjoy sharing. They invited us to make plans for a visit a few weeks ago and we've been looking forward to it ever since. We also brought along Pastor Bryan, his wife, Julie, and their two girls. These are the girls that Koen calls "the grills" and on the way he says, "yeah, their my friends, well, Tav's my friend too. I have lots of friends."

Koen was ready to hit the ground running when we arrived! Farmer Ted, as we call him, emerged from the garage and Koen was already asking when could he go in the boat, etc. And first Farmer Ted had another surprise...a dune buggy!Koen was pretty excited about riding in the vehicle. He actually didn't get to go very far in it due to some mechanical difficulty, but he didn't care. It was fun enough to hear the loud motor, wear a helmet, be strapped in and move a little bit.So, we headed down the steep hill to the fish pond. The boys setting up...Kyra holding a worm! Tavin looks like he's pointing at it, but he's actually "talking" a mile a minute about the water.Tav was very interested in the boat even before it got into the water...Koen and Doug are fishing and do you see the little guy trying to get involved? We put Koen in a life jacket as the boat was being prepared to get into the water. Tavin freaked out because he wanted to go too. So, we strapped a jacket on him as well. I think at this point he was already thinking the experience looked better than it would be to participate in.When the boat pushed off he just started crying, "ma ma ma ma." I went over to the shore to pick him up so the other guys could enjoy their ride without Tav whining. Poor little guy. After the time down at the fish pond, we hiked back up the hill to the horses! Tavin loves animals and he was calmed by them and interested in petting them which was sweet to see.Koen, of course, was just ready to ride!Koen was a lot more brave than when we visited the farm last year. He was anxious to ride and sat firm in the saddle right away. When the horse shifted its weight the first time though he go a little nervous so he wanted me to walk alongside of him as the horse was walked in circles. In between rides, Koen got to groom the horses. Our friends own 4 horses, all girls. They are all so sweet and patient with these little kids.Koen let me ride with him when he went on the larger horse. I loved, loved, loved it! I was one of those girls growing up who wanted horses so badly. I imagined I owned them, I read books about them, my sister and I would even pretend our bikes were our horses (am I revealing too much here?). After seeing Big Brother on a horse with Mommy, we thought Tavin might be willing to give it a try. And amazingly enough, he did! I was so excited! After all these fun outdoor activities we all headed inside for a delicious meal provided by our gracious hosts. Tavin laid down right around dinner time, but Koen got to stay up and eat dinner with the adults (and "the grills" of course), play some more and watch a movie. We adults got to chat for awhile since the kids were busy. It was such an enjoyable evening. We were so blessed by the amazing hospitality of these lovely friends.
