Today we spent our family time at the zoo (well, prior to that we dragged the boys to Walmart Supercenter, but that trip is hardly worth blogging about).
I think the heat had Koen a little more lackadaisical because he was whiney and just low on energy. Doug and I were good sports about it and he rode around in the stroller and rode on Doug's shoulders in between short walking stints.Tavin enjoyed riding and walking today, but he really, really enjoyed the animals that we got to see. Actually it was hard to get in to the see the animals. It was as if today was Pittsburgh Day Camp day to visit the zoo or something. Oh well, we made the best of it. Here's Tavin trying to get a peek at the seals swimming around (big brother didn't really understand how to get out of the way). The sharks were active in the underwater tunnel today, so that was fun for the boys. Koen said, "why are they not happy, Daddy?" referring to the way their mouths are situated in a perpetual frown. Doug and I attempted to answer that one with no real facts at our disposal. Are they just mad animals? Do you think sharks are happy? Why do dolphins have mouths that look as if they smile and sharks as if they frown? One of the polar bears was really interesting today. Sometimes they just lounge around and I'm always just dying to see them jump in the water and make a splash or whatever else polar bears do. Today this one came right up close to the window to say hi to Tavin and I. Then after we left the window to climb to the window up above, Koen and Doug caught him jumping, with a great splash, into the water to catch a ball a zookeeper threw. Very fun!It was a quick trip to the zoo, but still a nice way to get some fresh air, exercise and a change of scenery. Thanks to Aunt Abbie for the annual zoo membership. We love how we can go for an hour or two and not feel guilty that we aren't getting our money's worth. Instead we enjoy lots and lots of shorter trips that we can all enjoy better!
