Spring Beach Day

Today looked to be the warmest and sunniest day to go back to the beach and spend some time there, so obviously that is what we did!

We had a funny morning before we headed out though. (Well, not that funny, but this is my life...small variations from day to day can strike me as amusing...it keeps things interesting!). Koen and Tavin have been sharing a room here. I like when they do that. I think it's fun to see how they handle it and hopefully one day they will share one at home and so it's good practice (plus we don't always have the luxury of staying in several rooms when we travel, so it's good for them to get used to it in case it's necessary). Anyways, they've been doing very well with it. Most of the mornings Koen has woken up first and I sneak him out of his room around 7am or so and he plays downstairs until we start our day around 8am. So this morning I was hoping that K would just stay put and sleep a little longer as he was so moody and disobedient yesterday. I was hoping Tav would wake up at a normal time and then they would just hang out in there together until our start time. Well, I got my wish in that Tav woke up first. But oddly enough he woke up at 6:15am! He never wakes that early. But since he started chatting (and probably would've gone back to sleep eventually if he were in there alone) Koen woke up and started chatting back. They entertained each other for an hour and a half. Koen would call every once in awhile on the monitor, "Mommy, Tavin keeps throwing his blanket and I have to get it." Or, "Mommy, I'm giving Tavin books to read, but he's not looking at them." It was pretty funny early-morning-listening around here! I was impressed that Koen doesn't try to be aggressive with Tav in that time. He just was helpful and hilarious with their banter back and forth.

The rest of the morning was pretty normal as we played with Grampa and laid low in the house since it was a pretty cool morning outside. Grampa found an old cassette player and Koen listened to my old tapes that I enjoyed when I was little with songs/stories on them. He was so into it. Really cute! We actually took it in the car with us today and he listened the whole time and was singing along by the end of the journey.
Tavin is getting really comfortable with Grampa and Grampa is learning to translate Tav's grunts and points to figure out what he wants (i.e. another grandson has his Grampa wrapped around his little finger).

After a brief, but needed, morning catnap for Tavin, we headed out to the beach! It was still in the 40's in Bow, so we were hoping it would warm up as we headed East to the coast. Thankfully the weathermen had been correct and it was about 55 when we got out of the van at the ocean. Much to our surprise though as we walked up to the breaker wall we actually saw spray shooting over! When we got a little closer we saw that yes, indeed, it was very high tide and there was no beach to sit on!
Koen was amazed and had lots of questions to ask (have I mentioned we are in the "why?" phase!!!). He was mesmerized watching the powerful waves. He had a great attitude about the situation though and said, "Well, I guess God wanted the water to be up high today." (We've been talking a lot about the fact that God is in control hat God always has a plan and a reason). We made an adventure of it and piled back into the van with all our supplies and headed to a few more of our favorite beach spots along the coast. Thankfully, there was one spot that had some sand available for our picnic and also some rocky, craggy coast for Koen and I to hike along after lunch. Perfect.

It really did turn out to be a perfect Spring day at the beach. We enjoyed our simple picnic. Koen was very brave and hiked across the smooth, diverse rocks on the beach with me (and then got quite adventurous on his own going over some larger stones...he wanted me to take a video of him teaching me how to rock-climb, I decided to forego that adventure). Tavin loved sitting on the blanket scooping up sand with the shovel. At first he concentrated on just getting it onto the shovel, then he enjoyed dumping it into his lap. Finally, he discovered he didn't mind the feel of sand on his hands and just scooped it up and distributed it every which way in his sweet little fingers. He also really enjoyed holding onto Gramma's hands and walking along the boardwalk.

After a while at the beach it was time for our walk to the Beach Plum down the road, a favorite ice cream shop. Tavin was in the back pack and Koen was in the stroller. Despite the fact it is still cool and Spring here at the ocean, many people were already enjoying the "open" sign hanging on this seasonal treat stop (super popular place). Koen was so excited and has come to love this part of our beach routine. Tavin will be right behind him on that as he got a real kick out of enjoying ice cream from my bowl and brother's. Tavin was hamming it up today. Here he is leading his brother in silly spoon tricks. Then Koen found a kid-appropriate seat and Tavin lovecd being just like big brother!
What a great day at the beach. It was exactly the Spring day we wanted to have there. Sun, not too cold, a little adventure, some exercise and the ocean that is so good for my soul!
