Keeping Koen Busy for Spring Break Week 2

Our week has been full and on purpose! Since Koen was off from school yet again this week (and it doesn't resume until next Wednesday!!!), I made plans basically every day to keep us outside in the very pleasant Spring weather with friends, some of which we see all the time, others we haven't seen in awhile. You already saw the post about our visit to the zoo on Monday with our neighbors. Well, on Tuesday, we went to the big wooden playground at Highland Park with my friend Deborah and her kids, Miles, Claire and Hazel. Koen was excited to see Miles, it's been about a month since we've been able to hang out with them for a morning. Tavin is even getting familiar enough with our little network of friends that he was excited to see Claire. The big boys were so busy on the playground, that I couldn't really catch a picture of them playing chase and all the other fun ideas they came up with in this castle-like playground. Tavin stuck near me mostly and was subdued which has been his pattern all week, poor guy. Still catching up from the trip and looking for some kind of break from these busy days (little does he know there isn't a break for at least a week and a half). Here he is hanging out at a picnic table. Fun times for the little trooper. At lunchtime I grabbed a shot of the kids (except for Hazel). These 4 do really well together. The little conversations and playtime are always cute to watch as they develop. While we were sitting at the lunch table, little Hazel was just drooling over all the real food. Deborah hasn't given her any food yet and felt bad giving in without her husband, Grant, there, but finally she did, so I documented it with about 20 pictures. Here's one as she grabs her first bite!On Wednesday Doug needed the car so I had plans closer to home to keep Koen on his toes. After breakfast we got a fun chore out of the way, both the boys got haircuts. Really, they both needed a clean-up trim. Koen really does need to go to the hairdressers every couple cuts, but I've been finding that I can put that off by trimming him up in between. Tavin got his second cut and this time I did some more shaping. It was more like a real hair cut than the first one. Here's the before picture. They are both staring at Thomas the Tank Engine on TV.And here is Tavin after the cut. So handsome! Tav was so proud of himself that he got a big boy haircut just like brother. He kept saying, "cut, cut" and rubbing his head.Another after shot. Not too shabby if I do say so myself! After I cleaned up Tavin, he got a special seat to protect the chair from any lingering fine hairs. He was so concerned about staying on the towel, it was hilarious. You can also see Koen's dire need for a trim in this shot. Bushy!Another before shot. This hair cut was overdue! And the after shot: quite a dapper young lad!I feel like he looks two years older with his hair all trimmed and styled. So sweet. After haircuts, we vacuumed up the mess (Koen's hair is getting thick, it's amazing how much mess his trim created!). Then I gave the boys a nice bath to make sure they weren't itchy all day. I got them dressed and then we got ready to head out into the developing beautiful day. We met our neighbor Audrey and her kids, Xavier and Elizabeth, for a walk to the library, then Whole Foods and home via the playground. The kids had a lot of fun together at the library and eating lunch outside of Whole Foods, but it was fun watching them work together on the playground. Koen and Xavier were pretending to build a house in the bushes at the edge of the playground. Tavin kept coming to check on his brother and I chatted with Koen to make sure he tried to include him. Here's what he came up with. He found a small hole in the bush where he told Tavin it was his house. Basically any time Tavin came over to check out what Koen was doing Koen would say, "Tav, go to your house." And this is what he would do. How cute! Here's big brother and Xave working on their little house (Tavin is actually in the bush behind them on the other side...hilarious!).We got home just in time for naptime. Koen had walked much of the way to the library and to the playground from Whole Foods and then home from the playground, he was exhausted! It was funny because I had actually encouraged him not to nap by telling him he could play if he wanted. (He's been a little rowdy/awake at bedtime and it shows in his AM behavior when that happens!). But he was so tired that he fell asleep as I left his room and I had to wake him at 4pm. Oh well, I guess he needed it.

Today we had a playgroup meetup at our normal location of Osceola Parklet. It was a great turnout which was so much fun. Lots of moms with kids of all different ages. Tavin is struggling with allergies (it's too bad you can't sell snot, this kid produces it like crazy!) and so he wasn't really himself and again clung to me and asked to go home most of the time we were there. Here's a happy moment though when he was eating his banana.Koen biked to the playground and biked a lot while we were there. Grampa, you will be happy to know that he is doing a fabulous job getting himself started as you reviewed with him in Florida. Thanks so much for your work with him. It's so much easier for me now! He also had another big accomplishment at the playground today. He learned to start himself on the swing and get going quite well by pumping his legs. I've taught him before, but there's nothing like watching a peer do it with ease to help inspire him!
Koen mostly played with the bigger kids, Carson and Camryn. They played chase, he rode his bike, they did the swings and played at the playground. It was really fun to see him so active and not whining at all. He even rose above the silliness that often ensues with kids his own age. They were having more fun really playing which was great to see. Tavin did play with a few friends too despite his sad state. Here he is chatting with Porter and Kaiser. We left the playground a little before 1pm and the boys went to nap a little before 2pm. Tavin's allergies have given him quite a cough, which is frustrating. This happens every year. The cough of course woke him up early. Ugh. Poor guy. I think this year I might try medicine now that he's over 2. It just seems so hard for him. In years past this cough has lasted months. Anyways, overall, these have been some fun days back in the Burgh. We are thankful for the friends that really make up quite a family for us here (especially for me as I am still getting over missing my family after being with them in Florida). Thanks for making this a good week, friends. More fun to come!
