Stone Harber, Part I

Written before naptime yesterday, finally got wireless to work to get it out this morning...

Well, the frantic packing paid off and we are on a wonderful family adventure in Stone Harbor, NJ with Doug’s parents and his brothers and their kids. We came here last November with them for a long weekend and so it’s fun to now be here with all the shops and restaurants open. It is such an adorable beach town. I’ll have to get a picture of the main street for the blog this week. So cute! And the beach houses lined up road upon road remind me of our recent trip to Destin, FL.The boys were awesome on the car ride. We made it in record time of 6 hours and 15 mins. It felt like nothing after our long (and completely worth every minute of it) trek to Florida in March. Koen and Tavin are such great travelers. Koen we barely heard from because of books on CD’s, music CD’s and some DVD time. Tavin, on the other hand, was just our little entertainer. He was so sweet, happy, gleeful even! If we were bored, we would just look back at him and he would do something silly to make us laugh. The only time he made a noise like a cry was when his hat fell off and he wanted it back on. I can handle that!
Most of the family was out when we arrived, so we headed to the beach after a quick unload. The boys were overjoyed to get into the water and stretch their legs after the car ride. Koen is very comfortable with the ocean after many trips to Gramma & Grampa’s and the chilly coastline and our few trips to FL in recent years. But Tavin is new at this and oh my goodness he absolutely loves it! He is very bold and fearless. Koen would have never crawled through the sand. Tavin is just attacking it. He’s doing some walking practice, but doesn’t mind diving in on all fours either. Doug and Koen started digging a hole and fortifying it for fun and Tavin climbed in and claimed it as a pool. Hilarious! We had a nice family dinner and then we put the boys promptly to bed actually a little before 7pm. They were exhausted! Tav had slept for about 30 minutes in the car, but of course Koen hadn’t. They went to sleep with no fuss despite being in the same room. They slept all night and did awesome this morning, so that was a relief since we were all piled in together.

We got out to the beach early this morning since there was a threat of rain. It was gorgeous! Mid-70’s, mostly sunny and the water feels only a little cooler than the air temp. Amazing! They are dredging the sand here (not exactly sure what that means, Doug explained it, but it still didn’t make much sense to me). The huge vehicle they use for it is amazing and quite the fun attraction for the boys to watch! Tavin was again so happy to be at the beach (Koen was as well, but I guess I’ve gotten used to the fact he’s a beach lover like me!). Tavin actually bent down on all fours and took a bite of water and sand. I told him “no” and “yucky” and he did it one more time. The second time he took enough sand to realize why I said “yucky,” but thankfully it still didn’t bother him badly enough to spoil his fun.

After a while at the beach, we rode home on our bikes and got cleaned up, re-packed to get some lunch and then headed out to the main drag to find some lunch. We went to a little seafood spot with outdoor seating on the bay. They were very kid-friendly in a low key way. While we were waiting for the food a kitchen worker came out and pulled up crab traps for Koen to check out!Well, the boys are sleeping now and I’m off to take a walk now that the rain has cleared. It’s cool now and that seems perfect for a walk on the beach to me. Wish you were here, Mom. You would love this!

I’m not sure how often I’ll get to post from here, but I’ll try as I can get wireless service!
