Morning at the Zoo

Today we had plans to meet my friend Deborah and her two kids, Miles and Claire at the zoo. It was very nice to get out of the house before 10am and have a nice long adventure to enjoy with the boys. It was actually the longest trip we've ever had to the zoo. We were there about 3 hours. Here are some highlights...

Yesterday Koen asked me if we would ever see a real dinosaur. I asked him if he meant like at the dinosaur museum where we see their bones? And he clarified, "no, a real dinosaur." Well, I had to explain to him that they aren't around anymore, but that tomorrow at the zoo we would see a "dragon" that is kind of a similar to a huge lizard or a dinosaur. He was thrilled!I was a little nervous he would be bummed by the size or the fact it barely moves, but he was thrilled that he got to see a real dragon, so I was relieved!

I decided to take the wagon as our mode of transport throughout the zoo today. I still haven't decided if it was a good idea or a bad idea. On the one hand it is a lot easier for the boys to get in and out of, but on the other hand, they also really like pulling and pushing it. I think it's worth another try some time to see if it's a good zoo option, I think it worked just as well if not maybe better than the double stroller for practicality purposes. Here's Tavin trying to enjoy a snack in the wagon while also requesting to get out to see the next animal. Let's just say, the wagon and two boys kept me on my toes! The new leopard exhibit is great! He was right up at the glass. Tavin loved checking him out!Koen found a statue of the leopard and spent more time with that than the real thing...go figure. He and Miles are such little buddies. Poor Miles. Koen was a little intense at the beginning of the zoo trip. (When I say "a little intense" that really translates to completely frustrating to the point of tears when he wasn't looking. Let's just say I am now one of those mothers that people look over their shoulder at and wonder what must be wrong that their kid is screaming and out of control). Thankfully he evened out after lunchtime. Here's a picture of all 4 hot, hungry kids at a snack break at the end of the trip. Post Koen's melt-down they really all did a great job together. I love that my kids have little friends like this to do life with. Deborah, I'm so thankful for you to do motherhood with as well!Tavin did a lot of walking and pushing the wagon, so he was quite exhausted towards the end of our time there. Here are he and Claire catching a break in the wagon. All in all, it was a great trip to the zoo. A warm, sunny day outside with my boys is always a good thing and spending that with friends is even better.

Finally a Look at Gramma & Grampa's Week With the Boys!

I've been wanting to do an "ode to Gramma and Grampa" since we got back to the Burgh. They did such a fantastic job of caring for the boys and giving them a very memorable and fun-filled week while we were away. After getting some great pictures capturing their time together from Dad and Abbie, I made them a photo book as a thank you present. Turns out I can post it on my blog to share. So, I figured this was a great way to share with all of you the great week they had together. Thanks again, Mom and Dad. Your time with the boys was a blessing to us and certainly a special time for them!

Beautiful Weather Continues!

I always seem to appreciate each season, but it's like a new realization every year. The twilight of summer could be one of my favorite weeks of the year. Plenty of warmth and sun, even heat, but the nights cool off and the mornings start to turn brisk. Ahhh...

Yesterday morning I had the car and a long list of errands to run, so I took the boys out to Highland Park for some time to run out their energy at the park before heading to Target, Whole Foods and Giant Eagle. The plan worked perfectly. They played well with each other and other kids at the park (particularly Koen plays well with other kids, Tavin is more at a stage where he says, "mine" to basically anything that looks interesting to him that another kid touches).
Not too much in addition to say about yesterday morning. Just loving getting some errands off my to do list, spending time in the beautiful fresh air with my boys and then cramming enough super productivity into naptime. After naptime Koen started singing like he was the other morning, so here's a video of him singing that same worship song. It's so precious!

Last night Tavin was interested in helping me water the tomatoes. He's seen brother do it before, so I think that was his main motivation. He was concentrating so hard and chatting to me the whole time. So cute! Here's a video of Tavin in the bath. He is really into bubbles right now.

Today we had plans, but they ended up being cancelled, so we kept it simple and went to Osceola for part of the morning. A friend of Koen's happened to be there, so that was fun. Tavin is really enjoying getting around on the playground equipment which is so fun. I'm sad in a way to see him turn into a "big boy," but also happy that he is enjoying learning so many new things each day. Such a ham!!!Well, that's about all I have for now. I could go on and on and on about the troubles Koen has been causing, but after a good chat with my mom on the phone and the kid himself taking a good nap (almost 3 hours of no interaction with him) I feel a little more OK with this really, really difficult stage we are at. I'm praying for strength and wisdom to get me through the remaining hours of his day. I hope it goes better than the first part of the day did. Let's just say I didn't include a lot of info about disobedience, consequences, talking back, frustration, more disobedience, etc., etc. It was fun. Here's to a fresh start!!

Another Great Summer Day with Daddy

I love it when Doug has a weekend with an actual full two days off. It only happens every few weeks it seems, so when it does we take advantage of it. It feels so good to have a weekend together! I don't have a ton to say about our day and only a few pictures, but don't be fooled, it was a fantastic day with Doug and the boys.

The boys slept in and we had a late breakfast. Perfect! Then we decided to go to Frick Park for the morning. We split up so that Koen and Doug could go play wiffle ball (Koen continues to amaze us with his early baseball skills!) and Tavin and I hung out on the playground. After a while we all met back up, but Doug and Koen headed out onto the trails with Koen on his bike. I put Tavin on the stroller and went for a 20 minute or so run in the woods. It was getting muggy and hot, but it still felt good to be moving through the woods. Frick is definitely such a treasure of a park!

The boys were pretty tired, especially after all the fresh air and outdoor activity, so we packed them into the car to grab lunch at D's in Regent Square. Koen hung on to his last bits of energy quite well and really enjoyed coloring and having his own apple juice while we waited.a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoXoYFTqoGQ-l7nNtdb_wotaXhdFl38S7NI4n6LCnCAX5T33JE1dyg4CiVTg905Zsm4QfGHyTAb26bWIpiBbyhpjUpEI_GIR00NY4Ahfx_hVrm4MUbIPtB7-qBdlvlM_Zi6miLI4lDvBs/s1600/Aug+27+%25285%2529.JPG">Tavin was a cranky pants as evidenced by this smug shot. So, while we finished the wait for the food, Doug took him outside for a walk on the sidewalk. He was enamored with the new bus stop at the corner and spent most of their little time climbing up and down off the bench. We got them home ASAP after lunch as it was definitely time for nap. The late night last night was showing it's effects. I jumped out of the car to grab a few things from the grocery store and meet the boys at home on foot. Poor Doug, when he got home only moments before me, everything fell to pieces. Well, literally. Tavin was clingy and just sucking his thumb, Koen went to hang his hat on the coat rack and knocked over a vase of flowers shattering it. This made him start to cry like crazy. Doug somehow got them both into bath and upstairs in new outfits and into bed in about 10 minutes. When I got home I heard Koen screaming in his room, so I rushed up to say goodnight to the irrational overtired little guy. The boys both had long 3 hour naps which they totally needed!

That night we packed them up again to head to Julia and Steve's house for dinner. We've known this couple for a few years now and Doug actually did their wedding last Spring. It was sweet of them to invite us over including our boys.

Here's Koen making friends with their new kitten. How cute!
The boys laid down and went to sleep close to normal time at our friend's house and then we woke them up and took them home around 9:30pm. Tavin did very well laying back down right away. Koen did well too in the sense that he "laid down," but it was hilarious because he got all wound up on the way home and he and Teddy had a crazy time for literally an hour before he went back to bed. He did settle down all on his own though, so it was fine with us (actually more like hilarious to us...I should've recorded it!!).

Thanks to Steve and Julia for a lovely meal, being so gracious to host with our boys and for a fun night in general. We were so blessed to be entertained two nights in a row this weekend. We love entertaining ourselves, but it's a nice break to go to someone else's house every once in awhile and we loved our nights out with the boys the last two nights. Well, it's time to pack up for church, etc. Gotta run!

A Great Summer Day With Daddy

Here's a cute sound-only video of Koen in the morning hanging out in his room. He's singing a song from a worship CD that we listen to in the car a lot. It's so sweet to hear him praising the Lord and I still absolutely love his little 4 year old accent.

Ok, well, I couldn't get the video to load. Will try again later!

It was a great way to start the day listening to that and Koen was in a very good mood. He and Doug made omelets as they often do on Doug's day off. The boys spent about an hour with Doug so I could get some work done. Koen had a 10am doctor's appointment so we left a little before that had a nice walk there including a great view of a train from the busway bridge ("perfect timing!").

Koen went to the doctor for a check-up after he had some lethargy and headaches earlier in the week. I felt like I wanted to get him checked out before he went back to school and make sure there wasn't anything going on. Thankfully he is a 100% healthy kid. He even got his hearing and eyesight checked and everything is normal. Doesn't he look like the picture of health? I felt a little dumb taking him, but also relieved, so it was worth the visit and the peace of mind for sure!On the way back from the doctor's we had planned to meet up with Doug and Tavin at Osceola. It was a beautiful sunny day and not too hot, so it was a nice morning for some playground time. The best part of the playground (well, besides the fact we were all together) was there were 2 dump trucks, a roller and a few other machines and trucks doing a project at the hockey court. In the picture below you can see Doug and Koen sitting up on the playground equipment watching the action.Tavin was quite interested as well although not quite as patient to just sit and watch so he and I had some fun on the swings and the playground while Koen and Doug served as an audience for the Pittsburgh Public Works crew.We split up on the way home again so Doug and Koen could go put lunch together and Tavin and I walked down into Bloomfield to go to the post office and the bank. In between those errands we walked past Alexander's, a classic Italian restaurant on Liberty Ave. Our neighbor Ceasar used to work there and still helps out hosting at lunchtimes a few days a week. He happened to be outside as we walked by. Tavin loves Ceasar, so we stopped in to say hello. I think it totally made Ceasar's day to show off Tavin to his boss and the server girls. He gave Tavin and I wedding soup on the house too which was fun. It was really sweet. A spontaneous little snack outside with a special friend. I wish I had a picture, but Tavin was all over the place showing off for his audience and eating the soup, so I didn't get a chance to snap one.

After lunch I played with the boys in the backyard until naptime. The boys had pretty good naps and we got them up a little before 5pm. We had plans to head up to the Wexford area for a dinner party. We brought the boys and they did so well. Koen stayed up until 10pm and was on his best behavior (I'm sure we will pay for it eventually, but I was very proud of him in the moment!). Tavin slept there just fine. Here's an adorable shot of him sleeping when we went to get him up to drive home. Passed out!The boys went to bed great. Koen slept in until after 8:15am and Tavin I had to wake up at 9am. It was a relief that we all had a good rest despite the late night.

Rainy Days Catchup

Ok, so there are a ton of pictures here, so I'm going to let them tell the story of what we did on Wednesday and Thursday due to unplanned rainy weather...

We've had such a lovely summer that I've really gotten out of the habit of checking the weather in the mornings. Wednesday morning it was cloudy and so it prompted me to look into it and there was quite a large green ("rain") area approaching us on the map. Since we had no plans with friends, I decided to take the boys to the Children's Museum for the morning. One of the best decisions I've made all week. It was probably one of our best visits ever!

Koen has been loving umbrella duty lately. Here he is dancing in the rain on our way into the museum.Outside the museum they are working on building a community park. The boys wanted to watch the construction trucks, so the museum trip was fun before we even got into the museum.Tavin was more involved than he has ever been at the museum. He never even rode in the stroller during our time there. He loved getting to sit in the Smart Car in the Garage room.Koen took advantage of more than just the car and he also flew the airplane and set off some parachutes. Here's the little mechanic in training. This picture is for Grampa. There was a new exhibit that we hadn't been to before, a Dora The Explorer Pirate Adventure. Koen loved it. He had a hook, a hat and a sword at one point. We headed up to the "nursery" floor and they had completely renovated it. They did a great job and it was fun to explore the better organized layout and the few new things to play with. Tavin liked having a train table all to himself. Although he didn't quite get how to keep them on track. Koen mastered the other table and had quite a story going on.Since Tavin was frustrated with the trains we headed over to the birdseed box. He loved shoveling in there. Look at the concentration!
And then Koen was still working on the trains, talk about concentration! Koen and Tavin both enjoyed drawing in the lit-up sand boxes. Koen did quite well sharing an area with his brother.Koen took Tavin for a ride on the see-saw to make bubbles. "Bubbles" is one of Tavin's favorite words right now, so he was excited when they started gurgling up due to the see-saw pumping. Finally, we headed up to the 3rd floor for some water play. Tavin has never taken part in this before and he absolutely loved it. He was so proud of himself to get to wear a coat and crocs just like brother for starters.Tavin is quite independent, but he did join Koen for a few activities. Koen is concentrating on getting a sailboat to go down into the channel. Tavin is focused on using a little bucket to dump water on the floor despite my constant reminders to "keep it in the pool."Koen is quite the thinker and engineer. He loves this pulley system. I know I've posted similar museum pictures on the blog, but I just can't get over how cute he looks in a hooded raincoat.Tavin was into watching his brother manuever the bucket up and down. He's still got that bucket though. Big surprise that the whole front of his outfit was soaked. It's a good thing it's summer! On our way out of the museum, they were decorating the unsightly construction fencing with plastic pinwheels. Koen got to put one on there. He was very proud to be a part of the project. So, that was our big activity on Wednesday morning. I love being members at museums as you can go for a few hours and feel satisfied without feeling like you wasted money and should've stayed the whole day or something. The boys loved doing something different and so hands-on. It was a great morning together.

On Thursday in the early AM hours we had big thunderstorms. The rain was supposed to have passed by the time we were to go to playgroup, so that was our original plan. After a rough disciplinary morning with Koen (I seriously think I'm talking to a wall sometimes!), we were finally ready to head out in the stroller to Osceola to meet whomever else was braving the foreboding looking clouds, it started to rain. So, the outdoor plan was out of the question. I had to get the boys out of the house though due to Koen's intensity (I just think the boy needs to get back into the school routine and be in an engaging atmosphere outside the house a few times a week and we'll see an improvement...he just bounces off the walls and doesn't listen sometimes at home...you take him out and he's practically angelic!). Since I already had a snacky lunch packed, we jumped in the car and headed to the library in Oakland and I texted Doug to see if we could stop by the church for lunch with him. Success!

Here's Koen pretending to be very busy on the computer. He's been way more into smiling for the camera. I love it. Look how precious his face is! It's a good thing the Lord made him so cute, it really helps me give him grace and understanding some days, you can't look at that sweet face and get too mad (well, I can, but it's tough). Tavin was very busy moving small chairs around. Not for any particular purpose, just to be busy I guess. We only had enough quarters to stay at the library for about 20 minutes (and actually that was all we needed to read a few books and play a little, I have discovered that the East Liberty one is a lot more fun for my boys). So we headed over to see Doug (and of course now the sun is shining...classic!). Oh well, we had a fabulous time in the basement of the church hidden from whatever was happening with the weather, rain or shine.

First we had our little picnic in the sitting area outside Doug's office. Koen was so happy to be with Daddy.Tavin was also quite proud to be eating at church with his Dad. The boys love Douglas so much. So precious! After lunch, Doug went back to work and I took the boys into the Kidz Church space and we played for an hour or so. Tavin was so excited to have the run of the place. He remembered that we had Sprouts of Faith there and was asking for music. Doug put some on for us and I gave Tavin some maracas. He was thrilled!Koen found the armor they've been using in Kidz Church for the "Armor of God" theme they are doing. And of course since Koen put it on, Tavin had to as well.
In this picture Tavin seems to be saying, "has anyone seen my helmet?"Koen played several games, did some puzzles and played with toys and Tavin basically buzzed around beside him or behind him. He is like Koen's little shadow. It's so precious. Koen did really well sharing with Tavin too which was nice to see.Well, that sums up the super fun parts of Wednesday and Thursday. It's been one of those weeks where it's just been me and the boys a lot. We've had some rough moments at home, but it's been a blast when we are out and about. So, I'm almost caught up on the blog now. Just today to go. Stay tuned...
