I had to really hold myself back not to do a Day 2 post yesterday as it was an "exciting" day in the kitchen project. Unfortunately in the process of removing the granite, the almost-inevitable happened...the 10 foot slab split at its weakest spot.
Our poor contractor, he really wanted to get the piece off without this happening even though we all knew there was a high likelihood that it would. He had originally wanted a granite company to come in and do it, but no one that he called would take on such a task due to the risk. So, I guess that's just how the cookie crumbles (or the granite)! We also found water damage from the summertime leak on a few of the cabinets which probably means we need to replace those. Check out an example.
So, the project could be bumping up in scale. At this point, since we've done all the work of clearing out the kitchen, etc. I think we are just at the "whatever" stage. We just want it to be quality and sound when it's put back together. Be praying for favor and provision as we walk through these decisions and wait it all out. Thanks!
Oh, side note. So, I had to be out last night and when I got home Doug was an hour into the stomach bug with poor Tavin. Then later in the night, Koen woke up affected. Penn hasn't been himself for days, so this explains that now and I'm hoping he's getting over it and not going into it. But let me just tell you that the stomach bug is my least favorite thing, but what tops it is not having your set tub, washer or dryer available for the clean up! Poor Doug rinsed all the soiled stuff off in the street into the storm drain with the hose in the rain no less last night. Doug handled it all in stride while I was basically melting down due to all the overwhelming aspects of the day. Thanks for being an amazing Daddy, baby. I'm praying over and over that you will be spared this icky sickness after being so close to it.
So, to continue with the update. Here's a picture from the end of the workday yesterday where the tile had all been removed and you can see the original pine floors and some outline of an old room layout. They certainly make fast progress!
There was one other discovery yesterday, an area of black mold. Definitely from the fridge leak situation. Thankfully today after removing more laundry room tile (which was quite a job, unlike the easy pry up of the kitchen tile), they discovered that it was just one isolated area that they can treat without calling in the pros and postponing the project. Phew!
So, that's it for now. The contractor just left a bit ago and thankfully there were no major surprises today. We deserved that after the "exciting" events of yesterday!
