I have to say that Halloween is my least favorite holiday of the entire year. But my little "monkey" totally makes it a better experience. I can't stand the scary costumes, not to mention all the unhealthy treats. But Koen just loved the whole experience of being dressed up, passing out candy, having friends around and generally being the center of attention. Koen was definitely really sensitive about the costumes this year and he did not like the scary ones. He was watching out for the scary costumes and then would have me cover his eyes. I was proud of him for not completely freaking out. We did walk down our street a little bit, but he would stop in his tracks every few steps when we would run into a scary costume, so we didn't get very far and he ran to return to our safe front porch where he was in his element doling out candy and wishing people, "Happy Halloween," "watch your step," "have a fun night" and "trick or treat." He was my little echo and did such a great job co-hosting the front porch.

Tavin spent much of his evening indoors with Gramma, but he did make an appearance on the front porch for a half hour or so. He enjoyed sitting with me as Koen and I passed out candy.

I need to take a moment to mention how insane the trick-or-treat traffic gets on our street. I invited friends over (in addition to the fact my mom is still here with us) to help me with the kids, the candy-giving and family/household safety since Doug had to work all night. I was so thankful for all of their help. Thanks, Brian, Lisa, Megan and Sky!
We probably gave candy to 150+ kids. We went through two huge, mega bags of Tootsie Rolls (yeah, lame-o, but seriously the budget can't take buying chocolate for that many people!) and then we also went through 5 bags of chocolate candy. And we still ran out 30 minutes before trick-or-treating was over. I was kind of glad for the excuse to get Koen back inside and on the getting-ready-for-bed track. The boys both seemed over-stimulated tonight. They both struggled to bed a little, but they are now sleeping quietly and soundly. I hope we all have a nice, relaxing sleep. I'm exhausted!

So, after the boys inhaled their dinners (seriously, Melder boys are hungry little creatures!), we headed off to Osceola Park to swing and play. It was a fantastic time outside. Koen is just a blast (I know I've complained a lot lately about his 3-year-old-ness, but truly, he is such a sweet, very vocal, little buddy). Tavin just gets such a big kick out of his big brother and it is fun to watch him explore his world crawling around the playground (not to mention trying to eat acorn tops and sliding down a slide for the first time!).

Comin' at ya! Watch out, he's fast! We now setup a gate between Koen's room and the playroom so if Koen wants to set up a "job," Tavin can't come and crash it down.
Ok, so he can't exactly get on the truck himself, but he loves being up there and sits up on it by himself playing with the steering wheel activities. One day we surprised Koen at the end of his nap by opening the door quietly and then pushing Tavin in on the truck by himself. Hilarious!
Still of course, plenty of time for rolling around on the floor with Mommy having some loves and ticklefests. My productivity during the in-between between the boys' naps is quickly disintegrating as Tavin is into everything in my room and multi-tasking on the computer is quite interrupted.
A quick pre-nap read, nothing like J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" from Daddy's bookshelf.
You can barely see it in the above picture, but Delia and Koen are spotting the tiger lazily laying in the sun. Not the most exciting first stop, but they were quickly off to the next. But first, Koen had to stop at the Zoo Map to chart our course. He loves maps and planning - a perfect combo!
So after the map we passed the rhino, the lions, a construction site, gazelles, ostriches and then on to the elephants. One of our family favorites. Above is a picture of the two little buddies watching the huge beasts romp around. Koen saw the baby and said, "he is so cute!"
The orangutang was in a crazy mood today. It had a new toy and was pulling it apart. The kids were mesmerized! The gorillas were kind of slothful today, so we hiked up the hill past the bears and then got to the aquarium. The penguins, polar bears and seals are our favorite in that area.
On our way out of the zoo the kids spotted this large rubber ducky and we put them up there. Delia was singing a song and Koen was just watching his friend sing. So cute.
Koen did a pretty good job with "listening and obeying." He walked a lot with Delia, but also rode in the carriage eating and eating and eating. Man that kid can eat!
