Picnic at the Point

On Saturday it was unbelievably gorgeous here in Pittsburgh.  Cool, comfortable and sunny.  Absolutely sublime.  I figured that it was the perfect day for something active that might be too hot to enjoy later in the summer...a big hike or bike ride perhaps?  We settled on a bike ride since the Arts Fest was still going on at Point State Park we figured it was a good destination point.  We parked at Three Rivers Rowing in Millvale and mounted our bikes.  This was Tav's first real-deal bike ride and he was AMAZING.  This kid is strong and doesn't complain.  He just loves to keep up and keep going (although he also is very chatty which totally affects his efficiency and speed on the bike trail!).  Penn had a blast in the back of my bike which was fun to see as last year he was not a big fan of wearing the helmet, etc.  This year he was like a narrator of our journey pointing out everything of interest with squeals and word approximations of excitement.  So entertaining!  Koen is a speedy one on his bike and so Doug stuck with him and I was the caboose plodding along with Tav.  Just a glimpse of the future though when the boys are grown and we can really trek around on our bikes together.  I'm thinking it's going to be a favorite family adventure option.  We met our friends, Dennis and Julia and their kiddos at Point State Park for a picnic.  It was a great reward after our hour-long journey (due to Tav's slow-ish speed because of the training wheels).  Here are some pics of our fun.  K & T made it to the point first.  We were just there the other night, but this momma had to take advantage of yet another photo opp.  Tav didn't agree.
If you look really closely way down at the bottom you can see a tiny person in front of a regular-sized adult.  That's Penn Rye weaving and running around in circles.  It takes him forever to get anywhere because he's too busy having fun and exploring.  So frustrating!  He's super independent too and throws a fit if you force him to hold your hand.
After some play at the fountain, the boys were pretty ravenous after their ride so we headed off to the side of the Point for lunch.  Here's Penn and Jay.  Penn looks retrospective about his peanut butter and jam and Jay looks pretty serious about his veggie straws.
No big deal.  Just another fun day in this great city.  Is it not such a cool town??!
Penn sure likes it!  (He especially loved seeing all the boats on the river.  This kid loves all types of vehicles...such easy entertainment in this city!).
Because it took us an hour to get to the Point we knew we should leave plenty of time to get back to the van and still make it home somewhere relatively close to naptime.  It's a good thing we did as it definitely took another full hour to get back.  It was such an amazingly beautiful day though, I could've cared less about how slowly Tav was pedaling.  It was great to be outside with my family enjoying our city and the beautiful day we were blessed with.  Definitely a great morning!
