New Mexico Travels

Just a little moment of hilarity and coincidence on our drive to Albuquerque...Doug and I were listening to his playlist and we the country song, "Wagon Wheel" came on.  Then we saw a sign that we were about to go past the town, Wagon Wheel, NM.  What are the odds???!!!  Obviously this was a highlight of our day.

We were pretty wary when we arrived at the hotel in Albuquerque the night before.  And the hotel sleep was so-so.  But an early rise (our bodies cannot figure out what time zone we are in...neither can our phones, apparently we keep crossing over the time zone line and we keep going in and out of states and reservations that do or do not honor daylight savings time!) meant we got to spot some iconic New Mexico sight-seeing air balloons on the rise (zoom in on picture below).
And from another window in our hotel room, the sunrise over the mountains.  Not too shabby for a crash pad hotel!

The last two days we've been working through a couple podcasts (found a great new series that has great, historically researched Wild West stories!) about Billy the Kid as we drive past a lot of the towns and areas where his life unfolded.  We are pretty much officionados on the topic now. =)
Had to show off this piece of roadtrip genius.  Doug at the last minute packed a bunch of bungee cords and they continue to come in so handy!  A lifesaver on this trip.  This day we used one to hang an ipad on so that Jansen and Penn could watch a movie together.  Ha!
While the boys watched shows (and we periodically stopped them to listen to the podcast) we drove past some amazing views.  Outside of Albuquerque there was so much red rock and incredible rock formations.  We were on and off old Route 66 and could see stretches of landscape for miles.  We saw so many trains running beside us.  So many completely different things to take in.  Doug and I really enjoyed it (and we made sure the boys looked out the window from time to time too).
Tune in to the next blog post to see our destinations...
