Today was the day of appointments!! It was Jansen's 2 month appointment, I had an appointment in the afternoon and then Koen had his 8 year well-checkup later in the afternoon. Phew! Crazy day!
First of all, Penn woke up really out of sorts. He's been battling a cold for about a week. He's seemed fine the last few days, but today I guess he took a turn for the worst. He had a slight fever this morning, but was also acting really strange, sad and pathetic. Poor bug! We had a packed morning though, so I gave him some Tylenol, said a prayer and hoped for the best. It didn't help that we were headed first to Jansen's two month appointment at the doctor's office and Penn HATES the doctor's office. He was convinced he was going to be poked and prodded, so it just made him more sad and pathetic. Tav, on the other hand, was bounding with happiness and energy (mostly because later that morning we had a playdate planned with his best bud from preschool). Tavin was really sweet to Penn and tried to keep him happy and be a comforter. Check out the differences in attitude as they waited for the doctor to check on Jansen!
And here's the real patient. Healthy Jansen...
As you can see, I had to step up his diaper size from 1 to 2 in recent weeks. The belly width and thigh girth was just making those size 1's not fit comfortably anymore! The appointment stats only proved that Jansen has grown well again in the last month. He was up now to 12 lbs., 13 oz. (49th percentile) and 22 and 3/4 inches (21st percentile). And of course, I have to say how this compares to the big bros...K: 12 lbs., 10 oz., 23 inches; T: 11 lbs., 14 oz., 24 and 1/4 inches; P: 12 lbs., 15 oz., 24 and 1/2 inches. Amazing how close they all are (and funny that Janse is my shortest so far!). Unfortunately, the 2 month well check-up = first vaccines. Poor Janse. The nurses were so sweet and took Tav and Penn to get stickers and pretzels so they wouldn't have to see Jansen's response (because it was LOUD and SAD). He calmed down quickly though as these resilient Melder boys always do. But the rest of the day Jansen basically slept (and had a lot of gas from the oral vaccine he had). Poor little guy!
Next we headed to a few errands, then our fun playdate with Tav's bud from preschool. Penn went downhill like crazy at the playground and basically just sat on my lap the hour and a half we were there. We made one more stop on the way home and then it was time to dedicate some "get better" attention to poor Penn. He got to watch a little show while some more Tylenol sank into his little system and then I laid him down about an hour earlier than his usual naptime. Thankfully he was able to sleep (and slept for over 4 hours before I had to wake him up).
I had an appointment in the afternoon (been dealing with thrush for the past 6 and 1/2 weeks and finally went to see the doctor, but unfortunately the result was not very satisfying, just going to keep trying to fight it with the same meds...ugh...praying my body can overcome this very frustrating, irritating, draining issue!). Tavin got to hang out with our neighbor, Jennifer, who came over to be at the house. I got home a bit before Koen got home from school and then soon after that it was time for his well check-up. Doug took him this time. Look at my big boy...waiting for the doctor, doing homework. =)
Koen weighed in at 53 lbs., 4 oz. (34th percentile) and 50 and 1/4 inches (48th percentile). And thankfully we got another healthy report on this 8 year old!
When Koen got home he finished homework and then got to play soccer in the backyard with Doug and Tav. Penn stayed inside and had no energy (probably due to the fever and lack of appetite the last few days and especially today). When the big bros got in from the backyard (and stripped off their pants because of all their dives in the dirt outside), they went and comforted Penn. It was precious. Koen, especially, was very intentional with Penn and seriously brought comfort to the sad little bug.
Well, that was our crazy day of doctor visits. Lord-willing, Penn gets better and we don't have to go back again tomorrow!
